Don’t Cancel Your Plans, Change the Tire

When clients experience a dip in motivation from a missed milestone or some kind of slip up, I share this anecdote that a wise person shared with me many years ago:

Imagine you were on a really special trip headed to a wonderful destination and that you had worked hard to make it happen.

But along the way you got a flat tire.

What would you do? Throw your hands up in frustration, and turn around and go home?

Of course not. You’d be frustrated I’m sure. But of course you’d change the tire (or get help to change it) and then carry on toward your amazing destination.

Yes, you’d arrive a little later than planned. But you’d still get there, and you’d be happy and proud of yourself for persisting.

Moral of the story: If you’re on a fitness journey, realize that there might be bumps in the road. Do your best to avoid them, but don’t let them stop you from reaching your goal.
